Under the glass playing surface are black squares alternating with squares of inlaid iridescent blue morpho butterfly wings. The colors of the butterfly wings seem to fluoresce as the blue changes to green and then to brown. The chessboard itself glows even in low light.
Each square is separated by gold trim. The chessboard has a laminated rosewood frame that blends well with the colors of the dark chess pieces. The frame measures approximately 20"x20". There are blemishes in two of the butterfly squares in the the upper left corner of the photo of the chessboard. Please zoom in for a close look at the squares.
The frame of the chessboard has a scattering of nicks and dings, but is still very nice for its age. The back of the chessboard has its original "Made in Brazil" label. While butterfly wing artworks were made popular in the Art Deco period, production ended in the 1950s, which dovetails with the production of the chess pieces. These items, both hand crafted, are from completely different parts of the world, yet each beautifully compliments the other.
