This is a Large Double Geode from the Keokuk Region, an area world renowned for it's excellent geodes and the minerals and crystal combinations that may be found within them. This geode was collected in Clark County, Missouri near the town of Alexandria. It formed within a geode-bearing layer of shale during the Geologic time period know as the Mississippian Period. This layer of shale is known as the Lower Warsaw Formation. So many unique and beautiful geodes have been found within this rock unit, and this one is no exeption. It is composed of an outer layer of Chalcedony that has been lined with hundreds of sparkling Quartz crystals. The crystals are well formed and have excellent luster and sparkle. If you look closely you will see tiny Pyrite crystals peppering the Quartz crystals.

They have weathered and given off some of their iron content which has tinted some of the Quartz a lovely Citrine color. In the larger geode, a large cluster of prismatic pink Calcite crystals has formed in one of the halves. The crystals are well formed and have beautiful crystal faces.

One half of the smaller geode has it's entire cavity filled with Calcite crystals and clusters. The other half has a large Calcite crystal and Pyrite crystals dotting the Quartz.

This geode is oval shaped and approximately the size of 2 baseballs placed on top each other. Refer to the photos for size reference. This beautiful and unique double geode will make an excellent addition to any collection as well as a nice display piece.
