This specimen was collected from an igneous dike found at the Ingersoll Mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It is believed that the Black Hills were formed at the same time that the Rocky Mountains were lifted up 30 - 50 million years ago.

However, the South Dakota School of Mines has dated the rock in this dike at 1.2 billion years old. As mentioned above, the rocks are classified as an igneous pegmatite that consists of a variety of minerals. The composition and percentages vary from piece to piece but you will find blue tourmaline, white albite feldspar, clear quartz, silver mica and lavender lepidolite present in most specimens. This stone is known by several commercial names including Indigolite, Indigo Tourmaline, Euphoralite and Celestial Granite. Both the Cheyenne and Sioux tribes, native to the Black Hills area, consider this stone to be sacred and use it in spiritual ceremonies.

Metaphysically, this stone is prized for it calming properties. Many people who hold the stone, use it in their healing practice or during meditation feel a sense of peace and euphoria.
